Ascot Elite has picked up Irish period drama “Black 47” in German-speaking markets ahead of its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Hugo Weaving(“Hacksaw Ridge”) and Jim Broadbent (“Iris”) picture was announced Monday as part of the Berlinale’s official selection.

Altitude is handling international sales and will have “Black 47” at the European Film Market in Berlin, while CAA represents the film for North America.

Weaving and Broadbent are joined in the picture by James Frecheville (“Animal Kingdom”), Stephen Rea (“The Honourable Woman”), Freddie Fox (“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”), and Barry Keoghan (“The Killing of a Sacred Deer”). Irish actor Moe Dunford (“Patrick’s Day”) and Sarah Greene (“The Guard”) also appear.

Set in 1847 during Ireland’s devastating potato famine, it follows an Irish soldier (Frecheville) who has been fighting for the British and abandons his post to return to his native land. Finding his family starving and brutalized, he sets out for vengeance, while the British send an old comrade (Weaving) to stop him.

Lance Daly (“Kisses”) directs the movie from a screenplay he penned alongside P.J. Dillon, a director of photography on “Game of Thrones,” and Pierce Ryan (“Standby”) and Eugene O’Brien (“Red Rock”).

Producers include Macdara Kelleher, whose credits include George R.R. Martin’s upcoming series “Nightflyers.” He said: “It’s an honor to be premiering ‘Black 47’ at one of the world’s most prestigious festivals, alongside truly great filmmakers. There’s a strong history of major Irish films launching in Berlin, and we can’t wait for the world to see this epic Irish famine story.”

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra is delighted to welcome Irish musician Brian Byrne as its new Artist in Residence,x

Navan-born Byrne, based in Los Angeles since 2003, is rapidly becoming one of Ireland’s most successful musical ambassadors, as a composer, conductor, songwriter, arranger and pianist. Recognition for his film scores includes a Golden Globe nomination and two World Soundtrack Awards (for Albert Nobbs) and two IFTAs (Zonad and Albert Nobbs). His score to The Good Doctor with Orlando Bloom has been praised by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety for its subtlety and romanticism. Barbra Streisand has just recorded If It’s Meant to Be, a song Byrne co-wrote with songwriting legends Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Byrne conducted Streisand in the recording, which features on her recent album Release Me.

Byrne has also collaborated with Bono, Katy Perry, Lisa Stansfield, Van Morrison, The Corrs, Vince Gill and Gladys Knight, to name a few. He has toured with Diane Warren, produced and arranged strings for Pink in The X Factor, arranged a song for Sex and the City 2 and played piano on Liza Minnelli’s cover of Beyoncé’s Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It). He is currently working on the music for Heartbeat of Home, a new show from the producers of Riverdance.

Brian Byrne’s appointment as RTÉ CO Artist in Residence is the natural next step in a long-standing and highly productive relationship with the orchestra. They share a vibrant, eclectic approach to music-making and have worked closely together over the past decade, in live performance and in the recording studio. Byrne also recorded his own new jazzy arrangement of the Late Late Show theme with the RTÉ CO when Ryan Tubridy took over as presenter. Their relationship has already notched up that Golden Globe nomination and two World Soundtrack Awards for Albert Nobbs, recorded in RTÉ Radio Centre. At the time, he spoke of his pride in the RTÉ CO’s enormous contribution to the soundtrack: ‘I am so glad I got to do it with the home team – this orchestra’s versatility is unmatched in Europe.’ In another significant breakthrough for Byrne and the RTÉ CO, their album Tales from the Walled City, with guests including soprano Danielle de Niese and violinist Nicola Benedetti, was recently released on Decca, the world’s most prestigious classical label.

Byrne has just returned to LA after his most recent visit to Ireland. While here, he recorded the soundtrack to the new Shiloh Fernandez film Amos’ Wake with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in RTÉ Radio Centre. He also acted as MD and conducted the RTÉ CO for the IFTAs on Saturday night at the Convention Centre.

Anthony Long, General Manager of the RTÉ CO, has welcomed the addition of Brian Byrne to the orchestra’s artistic team, saying: ‘While we are no strangers to each other, the cementing of this partnership will result in many exciting collaborations over the next three years and beyond. This appointment is a perfect fit with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra’s strategy and direction and gives us both the opportunity to continue to develop.’

Brian Byrne has said: ‘I am incredibly excited to be part of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra family. This will be a great and very fruitful collaboration!’
brianbyrnecomposer.comtag:brianbyrnecomposer.com,2005:Post/2781952013-01-10T06:08:06-08:002022-08-27T09:37:25-07:00Brian produced and arranged strings for Pink. Golden Globe-nominated composer Brian Byrne has written a love letter for the last great walled city in Ireland. Tales From the Walled City is a complete symphonic suite with eight short movements, written from the point of view of the Great Walls of Derry. Featuring The RTÉ Concert Orchestra, violinist Nicola Benedetti and soprano Danielle de Niese, Tales From the Walled City is due to be released by Decca on November 9th

The work was a gift from Brian to the City of Derry in 2008, in celebration of its jazz and big band festival, but while his original intention was to write a four-minute jazz piece, his creative journey took him on a different path and resulted in a fully symphonic suite of eight short movements, some containing no jazz elements whatsoever. Byrne explains, ‘If the Walls could somehow speak, they would have witnessed incredible stories and music over their long and sometimes troubled history.’ The movement titles capture a flavour of the piece: If the Walls Could Speak, Gossip at Tillie’s, The Cannon Speak, Children Play Outside St Columb’s Cathedral, A City Divided, A Love Divided, The Port of Derry and A City at Peace.

Complementing The Derry Suite, the three others pieces on the album have their own individual stories, and stand in musical contrast to heavier orchestrations of the suite. Each features a star performer as soloist with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra: soprano Danielle de Niese, saxophonist Nigel Hitchcock and violinist Nicola Benedetti. Shall I Compare Thee, featuring Danielle de Niese, is based on William Shakespeare’s Sonnet No. 18, while Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra features a more modern sound, with Nigel Hitchcock.

Lament for the Fallen, with Nicola Benedetti, is perhaps the most personal piece on the album. Brian Byrne wanted to end the album with something simple, heartfelt and close to home, and this Lament had two inspirations. The first is that Ryan Tubridy asked him to write a piece in commemoration of the Irish Famine. The second is the recent loss of Brian’s father Jim Byrne, his biggest musical influence, biggest critic and biggest fan, to whom the album is dedicated.

This year continues to be an incredibly successful one for Navan native Brian Byrne, rewarding his move to Los Angeles in 2003 to develop his career. His music for Albert Nobbs has just won two awards at the highly prestigious World Soundtrack Awards 2012, the results of which were announced at the closing night of Ghent International Film Festival on October 20th. Recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the sound track has also earned him a Golden Globe nomination and a Satellite Award for Best Original Song (Lay Your Head Down, lyrics Glenn Close, performed by Sinead O’Connor) and won him his second IFTA Award for Original Score.

Adding further to the momentum, the new Barbra Streisand album features a song that Brian wrote, arranged and conducted with song-writing legends Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and his score to Orlando Bloom film The Good Doctor has won praise from The Hollywood Reporter and Variety for its subtlety and romanticism. He is also currently engaged in writing the music for the new show from the Producers of Riverdance, entitled Heartbeat of Home.

The album Tales from the Walled City continues Brian Byrne’s long and fruitful association with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, as composer, arranger and conductor. As well as numerous successful live performances together, other recordings include Byrne’s The Island and his arrangement of the Late Late Show theme in 2009, when Ryan Tubridy took over as host. In the liner notes for this album, he thanks ‘the wonderful musicians and friends that make up the incredibly versatile and talented RTÉ Concert Orchestra’.

Irish composer Brian Byrne has beaten off competition from Madonna and Florence + The Machine to win two awards at the highly prestigious World Soundtrack Awards 2012.
The results were announced last night at the closing night of Ghent International Film Festival where Byrne scooped awards for Discovery of the Year for his score to Albert Nobbs, recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and Best Original Song for Lay Your Head Down, lyrics by Glenn Close, performed by Sinéad O'Connor with the RTÉ CO.
Lay Your Head Down took the Best Original Song award ahead of songs performed by Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Florence + The Machine and Academy Award winner Bret McKenzie.
This follows an IFTA win for the LA-based Navan man and a place on the Oscar long list for the Albert Nobbs score and a Golden Globe nomination for Lay Your Head Down.
The Albert Nobbs soundtrack was recorded in RTÉ Radio Centre by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, with Byrne himself conducting.
"I am incredibly proud of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and its enormous contribution to the Albert Nobbs soundtrack," says Byrne. "I am so glad I got to do it with the home team. This orchestra's versatility is unmatched in Europe - let's hope there will be many more collaborations like this one."
Byrne previously composed The Late Late Show to usher in Ryan Tubridy's tenure and won an IFTA for his score for the Irish sci-fi comedy Zonad. He has also toured with Diane Warren and worked on the soundtrack for Sex and the City 2. He also played piano on Liza Minnelli's version of Beyoncé's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).
